What Is Agentic AI?

Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems made up of autonomous software “agents” that can independently plan, decide and act to achieve specific goals. Unlike traditional AI tools or chatbots that respond to a single prompt, agentic AI can handle complex, multi-step problems.

It works through a continuous cycle:

  • Perceive: gathering and analysing data from multiple sources (databases, software systems, user inputs).

  • Reason: using advanced models, often large language models (LLMs), to evaluate options, create a plan and determine the best course of action.

  • Act: executing tasks by connecting to other systems or tools via APIs, while operating within defined guardrails.

  • Learn: improving performance over time through feedback and new data.

Traditional software follows fixed rules, but Agentic AI, by contrast, behaves more like a digital operator. It can decide which steps to take, combine actions across systems, and adapt if circumstances change.

So rather than AI being a passive assistant, it can act as an active problem-solver, capable of automating workflows, coordinating tasks across platforms, and driving greater operational efficiency.
